      Director, Ukrainian Research Institute Research interests include the intellectual, cultural, and international history of Eastern Europe, with an emphasis on Ukraine. Teaches courses and seminars on early modern and modern East European history that engage major problems in the history of Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Poland, and Lithuania. The MAPA: Digital Atlas of Ukraine program is undertaken by the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute together with partners in Ukraine. It brings the latest innovations of information technology to studies of the modern Ukrainian history and contemporary political geography. We conduct our own studies and encourage scholars and students within Harvard community and beyond to use Geographic.

      More than twenty of our books have been copublished with Western academic presses and, since , with publishers in Ukraine. The Institute has also published over forty issues of the Journal of Ukrainian Studies and more than sixty research reports. Founded in June , the Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University (HURI) serves as a focal point for graduate and undergraduate students, fellows, and associates pursuing research in Ukrainian language, literature, and history as well as in anthropology, archaeology, art .

        Above and Beyond is the first book to appear in the West by a major Ukrainian independence figure and is the first by a former Soviet general to discuss the inner workings of the USSR's military.
